Lennel LaVaughn Hinton

Lennel Hinton, born in Portsmouth, Virginia, to Rev. James M. Owens and Mildred Owens Gray, was a beloved wife, mother, sister, aunt, grandmother, and friend who passed away peacefully on June 7, 2024. Lennel brought joy and warmth to everyone she met. She is survived by her husband, Mark Hinton, and was the proud mother of Millissa, Marcus, Deyonta, and Anthony Hinton. She was the grandmother of Amiya, Alonte', Maceon, Zenith, Aaliyah, Brielle, Marcus Jr., Keyoni, A'Thalia, Deyonta Jr., Ishaan, Ayanna, Arianna, André, and Isla Hinton, whose lives she touched deeply with her love and wisdom. 

A devout Christian, Lennel's faith in the Lord was the cornerstone of her life. Her beautiful smile lit up every room she entered, bringing comfort and happiness to those around her. An accomplished musician, Lennel played multiple instruments, including the piano and organ, in many churches throughout Virginia and North Carolina. 

She taught music lessons, served as a choir director, and was very instrumental with the youth, sharing her love for music with her community. Lennel's education started in Portsmouth public schools, and she graduated from Manor High School in 1973. Furthermore, she held a Master's degree in Business and a Bachelor's degree in Accounting. 

She was a Certified Public Accountant (CPA). She started her career at London Fog, where she worked for over 20 years, and later served as a dedicated secretary at Emanuel AME Church for over 20 years before retirement, demonstrating excellence and dedication in her professional life. Lennel's legacy of kindness, strength, and unwavering faith will forever be cherished by her family and friends. Her memory will live on in the hearts of all who knew her.
