Doris Lee Washington

Doris Lee Washington passed away on Friday June 14, 2019 in Autum Care Center Chesapeake, Virginia.  A very caring and special person entered this world on Sunday, November 21, 1943.  Fighting a good fight; she finished the race, and faithfully entered into heaven early in the morning on Friday, June 14, 2019 and received her crown of righteousness. She was predeceased by her husband, James Washington, brother, William Gibbs, sister, Lily Mae Gibbs, and brother in-law, Philip Flunory.

Doris Lee Washington was the third child of six children born to the late Clifton Hudgins and Corrine Annabell Gibbs, raised in Brooklyn, New York.  She was educated in the New City Public Schools, lastly attending Sarah J. Hale High School.  Doris worked as a housekeeper in the hospitality and tourism industry of New York where she took up roots in Jamaica Queens, New York.

Her passion for life and love for people led her on her life’s journey that was full of good times that included: never meeting a stranger (she knew everyone in Roses and Food Lion); perfecting her favorite dance the “Shotgun”; being true to herself by being honest with you; a pro at playing checkers; famous for giving nick names that suited the person she gave them to; a WWF(World Wrestling Federation) fan and attended several matches at Madison Square Garden; lightening up a room with her humor; actively showing her love to her family and friends (she raised four of her grandchildren, three from infancy until her health prevented her to do so); and her unwavering commitment to her faith.  She answered God’s call to pour out her blessings, and fulfilling her life’s mission of unselfish giving by:  converting the basement of her home into a daycare center that she ran for over ten years, serving infants and toddlers, many times providing meals prepared with her own food; sending money ($15.00) for twelve years, every month to an incarcerated young man, she never met, and he in turn saved the money, and sent it to his family.

She moved her and her family to Virginia Beach twenty-four years ago, putting down new roots and starting a new chapter of her life.  Her desire to stay in the presence of God and of Christ Jesus, she raised her children and grandchildren in Mount Sinai Baptist Church where they all attended Sunday school and morning worship service.  For over twenty years, Doris was a dedicated member of Mt. Sinai, serving as an usher, and loved both of her Mt. Sinai pastors. To be prepared in season and out of season, Doris and her sister Ruth prayed daily together at 5:00 a.m., 12:00 noon, and 9:00pm most of their adult lives.

Doris Lee Washington leaves to cherish her memory: daughters, Kleo Washington and Miriam Washington, both of Virginia Beach, Hope Washington (Eldrick) and Charlene Washington both of Norfolk; sons, Jerome Washington of Chesapeake, and Christopher Washington of Fresno California; sisters, Ruth Mae Anderson, of Virginia Beach, Viola Taylor (Robert) and Alberta Flunory both of Newport News; granddaughters, Amberlee Washington, Ashanti Washington; grandsons, Izaiah Washington, Jakay Hinton, and Eldrick Rawls, Jr.; and goddaughters, Na-Twand Anderson, Dymonique Foster, and Diona Leigh Foster; and numerous nieces, nephews, great nieces, great nephews, cousins and a host of loving family and friends.
