His-Story
Alexander W. Tyler, Jr., affectionately known as “Butch,” was born in Clifton Forge, Virginia, on October 31, 1946, to the late Alexander W. “Bobby” Tyler and Mary Jane Tyler. Butch passed away peacefully surrounded by those who loved him most.
Butch attended Watson High School, where he was a proud four-year member of the undefeated football team, playing center. He also played the trumpet in the school band and graduated in1965. He went on to attend Virginia State College in Petersburg, VA, where he earned his Bachelor’s degree in Sociology in 1970. While at Virginia State, he was a proud member of the Sociology Club and later continued his education by obtaining an Associate degree in Business Management from Tidewater Community College.
Following college, Butch answered the call to serve his country and enlisted in the United States Coast Guard. He served honorably as a Radioman Second Class during the Vietnam era from March 13, 1970, to October 16, 1973, and continued in the reserves until 1976. During his time in service, he received the National Defense Service Medal and the Coast Guard Good Conduct Medal.
After completing his military service, Butch dedicated his career to social work. He worked for the Virginia Beach Department of Social Services, where he specialized in foster care and child protective services. His work was recognized in two local newspapers, The Journal and Guide and Virginia Beach Metro Weekender in 1980, where he was featured for his advocacy in the foster care system—particularly highlighting the importance of African American families becoming foster parents.
Butch was deeply involved in his community. He volunteered with the local Boys Club and was passionate about guiding and mentoring youth. An athlete at heart, he trained in Tae Kwon Do with his son, Brandon, and together they earned their black belts.
From a young age, Butch was rooted in faith. He was raised in Pine Street Baptist Church in Covington, VA. After marriage, he became a member of Providence United Church of Christ, and for the last 18 years, he served faithfully alongside his wife at New Life Church in Virginia Beach, where he recommitted his life to Christ
On June 19, 1971, Butch married the love of his life, Elvira C. Stokes. Together, they shared 53 years of devoted marriage. From their union came two children, Rachel N. Tyler, and Brandon A. Tyler, who brought him immense joy and pride.
Left to celebrate and cherish his memory are his children, Dr. Rachel N. Tyler of Woodbridge, VA, and Brandon A. Tyler, of Chesapeake, VA; and a host of extended family, friends, and all those whose lives were touched by his humor, and service.
